Lake District & surrounding area

Our top picks

There are lots of specific places to visit around us. If you like to see sites of historical significance to the North there is Hardians wall and Birdoswald which were built by the romans, the founding of which was in 112 A.D., nearly 2000 years ago! Lanercost priory is close to these places, built in 1169 it's architecture can be truly appreciated thanks to its condition, which is fantastic.
There is also Penrith and Brougham castle, the first being in the town of Penrith itself and Brougham being a short distance outside, however it is well maintained by English Heritage, it is even possible to climb the stair to the top although it is very high! There is also Brougham hall very close by which is one of the largest country house restoration projects in England.
Lastly for something extremely old the Lake District is home to stone circles which are up to 5000 years old! The Castlerigg, Swinside and Burnmoor stone circles are found in the Lake District and the cockpit is only a fifteen minute drive from Our Guesthouse, and also has a great view down on Ullswater. There is more information about these monuments here.
